World Chain, the mainnet associated with the Worldcoin project, has officially been rolled out.
Background
- World Chain is an Ethereum-secured layer-2 blockchain
- At launch, Optimism, Alchemy, Uniswap, Safe, Dune, and Etherscan will support the blockchain
- Alongside the mainnet roll out, Worldcoin is also rebranding to World Network
- The project — launched in mid-2023 — offers a digital identity solution that helps verify users' on-chain identity
- Users who choose to submit their biometric data [i.e. an iris scan] to prove their human existence receive an online passport and WLD tokens
Why should you pay attention?
- The blockchain is built using the OP Stack
- According to the team, user transactions account for 44% of OP Mainnet’s activity, making it the largest app on the network
- The team has managed to amass over 10 million sign ups across 160 countries so far
- The ultimate goal of the project, i.e. World Network, is to draw a line of distinction between humans and automated bots
- If you’re fed up with bots — or the phrase ‘AI’ itself for that matter — look no further, World Chain is a “humans-only” community
- At a time when AI agents and assistants are seemingly taking over the crypto space, the World project could gain renewed traction

- Commenting on the rebrand, the World team highlighted,
"As the scale of the project grows along with the importance of World ID’s proof of human protocol, the name 'Worldcoin' no longer encapsulates the mission of the project, to accelerate every human”
- They added,
"With its three key pillars (World Chain, World ID, and Worldcoin), World is truly a network of real, verified humans built to enable an optimistic future in which humans will continue to be at the center of AI progress"
Zooming out
- In other revamping news, DeFi lending protocol Maker recently rebranded to Sky
- Parallelly, its native stablecoin DAI was updated to USDS
- The protocol also unveiled Sky [SKY] — the native governance token for the wider ecosystem, as an upgraded version of the Maker [MKR] token
