Solana Team Ramps Up ‘Firedancer’ Testing

January 9, 2025

Solana is ramping up the testing of its 'Firedancer' software upgrade.

Background

  • The upgrade is aimed at bolstering the network’s processing speed
  • The team has been working on this since 2022
  • Interestingly, the software has been developed by the crypto arm of trading giant Jump
  • The aforementioned test will set the base for Firedancer’s mainnet debut

Why should you pay attention?

  • Solana's core developers aim to get a "super majority" of processing power on the chain's testnet
  • This will, in turn, be used to run through Frankendancer
  • Frankendancer is the early version of Firedancer
  • This latest CTA addressed to validators is Firedancer’s biggest test to date
  • This upgrade will help Solana crawl out of the ‘down-time’ trenches and boost its stability and speed

Who said what?

The Solana technical Discord announcement read,

“We would like to get a super majority of testnet stake to run Frankendancer by the end of the week”

  • The team added,

“Our goal is to have at least one feature gate activation happen on Testnet while Frankendancer is the supermajority. This test gives us more confidence in the upcoming release and helps to ensure that Frankendancer and Agave work together during epoch boundaries”

Zooming out

  • There is no launch date announced for Firedancer yet
  • For the time being, Jump Crypto has only launched Frankendancer
  • Several from the validator community feel the ongoing push for the adoption of Frankendancer is a sign of the software's "maturity”
