The Ethereum team is looking to accelerate pragmatic research. Over the past week, a bunch of changes have been implemented to support this initiative.
Background
- Starting with a single original "Research team" at the Ethereum Foundation, a group of five teams have now come together to form the "EF Research"
- The groups include: Applied Research Group (ARG), Consensus R&D, Cryptography, Protocol Security, and the Robust Incentives Group (RIG)
Why should you pay attention?
- The EF is expected to establish more transparent communication channels going forward
- Researcher Alex Stokes has stepped up as the co-lead of the EF along with Barnabe Monnot
- Others including Hsiao-Wei Wang have also joined the Ethereum Foundation (EF) leadership team
Who said what?
- Monnot emphasized,
"Our aim with Alex is to ensure that EFR is always at its best, internally and externally. Alex and I are starting a new team named "ResearchOps", focused on supporting the incredible work done by members of EFR, and more broadly on the delivery of research for Ethereum and its community"
- He added,
"For me the direction is clear: Build a world computer for all to use. This means a censorship-resistant L1 at the efficiency frontier and scale for L2s to onboard as many economies as we can imagine"
Zooming out
- Commenting on the current state of affairs, TheDailyGwei founder and independent Ethereum educator ‘Sassal’ said,
“The community would love to have you leading the EF into the next chapter of Ethereum's life — it's simply time for change”
- Some from the community want Danny Ryan to lead the reign because he “lives and breathes” Ethereum, while others continue to respect Aya Miyaguchi for her leadership and guidance
- Meanwhile, Eric Conner, the co-author of EIP-1559, feels that Vitalik Buterin ought to be more involved. He said,
“I much prefer Vitalik still be an involved leader for Ethereum rather than slowly taking a step back over the years. His genius and early leadership is what got us to where we are today”
- He added,
““Ethereum doesn't need the EF or leadership” is a take I cannot more vehemently disagree with. Not only is it human nature to look to leaders, this technology is still much too nascent to go that route. The chain can be decentralized but that doesn't mean leadership should be”
