Is Friend.tech’s Native Token Moving From Base?

July 4, 2024

Friend.tech does not intend to migrate its native token from Coinbase’s layer-2 Base to any other network. Via a recent post on X [formerly Twitter], the team announced,

“We’ve heard your feedback: you don’t want FRIEND moving to another chain. We agree.”

A few weeks back, the Friend.tech team announced that it was looking to migrate away from Base to a new blockchain created in conjunction with infrastructure provider Conduit. The aforementioned blockchain was dubbed Friendchain. It was all set to use the platform’s in-house token for governance and gas.

Racer - the pseudonymous co-founder of the project - outrightly batted to leave Base. He had offered a system design bounty of $200k to help figure out a way to migrate Friend.tech off of Base without causing major issues for users.

At the time, Base’s creator Jesse Pollak asserted that he will be sad if the team decided to leave his network. He, however, added that he would respect and support whatever path they choose to tread on. That’s the beauty of the decentralized and on-chain economy, he said.

On Thursday, the Friend.tech team went on to add that the native FRIEND token was always meant to be a 100% community-controlled token used to foster the Clubs contract. Notably, Clubs are community spaces on the protocol. Introduced in May, this is also one of Friend.tech’s core features. According to the team,

“Migrating the supply and liquidity would not align with that spirit. You'll still be able to create clubs, chat, buy keys, and use FRIEND on Base in the friendtech app.”

Furthermore, the team also announced that all protocol fees from the BunnySwap, Clubs, and v1 smart contracts have been turned off. In retrospect, all the fees will go to traders, LPs, and Club presidents in the community henceforth.

Friend.tech's native token’s valuation had shrunk by 23.6% over the past day. At press time, it was seen exchanging hands around $0.3661.
