Crypto battle royale game Off the Grid has officially been rolled out. Gunzilla Games has launched its early version of the video game on Sony's PlayStation 5 and the Epic Game Store.
Early live streams and reviews affirm that the game has AAA-level graphics and gameplay. Preliminary impressions also suggest that it is a mix of Apex Legends and Call of Duty Warzone.
Typically, players are shipped into a reality show-like experience while playing the game, where they ought to fight to survive in comprehensive online matches.
Neill Blomkamp, the Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Gunzilla took X [formerly Twitter] to share the early access announcement and the trailer.
Towards the end of Q1 this year, Gunzilla unveiled $30 million in funding co-led by CoinFund and Avalanche.
Via the free-to-play game, players will be able to trade in-game assets irrespective of whether they are playing the game on a PC, Xbox, or PlayStation.
As far as the on-chain dynamics are concerned, the base camp for player assets has been set on Gunzilla's GUNZ blockchain.
GUNZ — on its part — is a custom Avalanсhe L1 [subnet]. Players are provided full ownership of in-game assets as tradeable NFTs.
The free-to-play game has one large city map and a 60-player mode called ‘Extraction Royale.’ Players can earn GUN by completing in-game missions. However, at the moment, there’s no way to buy more GUN in the game.
It should also be noted that the actual GUN token hasn’t made its debut yet on the Avalanche mainnet. During the laytests, a separate testnet version of the token was being used.
Interestingly, Off the Grid is positioned to become the first PlayStation and Xbox title to feature a blockchain functionality that bestows gamers flexibility with respect to how they manage their in-game assets.
Samuel Steffanina, the Co-founder of WolvesDAO pointed out that the loadouts system between games was “confusing.” Alongside, the shotgun was “overpowered.” Likewise, the in-game voices were found to be “funny” initially but gradually became “annoying” over time.
On the bright side, he added,
“Limb-changing mechanic feels smooth, and the user experience is well-designed. Grappling hook mechanic is intuitive and popular. Positive feedback on sound effects, especially the knock sound when downing opponents.”
Overall, the game has been well-received by both streamers and viewers.
That being said, it should be noted that the early access is not the full Off the Grid experience. It just offers a glimpse of what’s in store.
