July 4, 2024

Tech giant Opera has upgraded its crypto wallet on its mobile browser, Opera Mini. It has integrated that market’s top stablecoins: Tether [USDT], and Circle’s USDC. Specifically, the team’s unveil announcement noted,

“MiniPay is getting an upgrade with revolutionary Pockets. Now supporting USDC and USDT.”

Powered by Mento Labs, users can switch between USDC, USDT, and cUSD with just a simple drag-and-drop motion using the new feature. MiniPay is based on the Celo blockchain. It uses Mentos’ USD pegged stablecoin cUSD.

Highlighting how the latest feature abstracts Web3 swapping and checks the simplicity box, the team explained,

“Swapping between assets often requires multiple steps and high gas fees. Drag & Swap makes it as easy as moving an icon on your screen.”

The transfers will take place with no hidden costs. Without worrying about the gas cost, users will just have to bear a fee of less than a cent.

According to the team,

“This upgrade is part of MiniPay’s broader mission to bridge the gap between traditional financial systems and the emerging Web3 landscape. We aim to make digital finance technologies accessible to everyone, simplifying complex processes.”

Africa is touted to be a mobile-first continent with mass adoption of smartphones. MiniPay has targeted this region and has over 3 million wallets activated across Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa.

In retrospect, it has become the fastest-growing wallet on the continent, the company claims.

MiniPay also features a 'discover' page that connects users directly to a curated list of decentralized apps within the wallet that gives them straightforward access to a host of tools ranging from universal basic income protocols, to savings applications, and games.
