Kabosu, the Shiba Inu dog that inspired the Doge meme, “fell into deep sleep” during the early hours of Friday. Atsuko Sato, Kabosu’s owner, announced via a blog post that a farewell party would be conducted on May 26 at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City, for ‘Kabo-chan.’ Sato further went on to express gratitude and thank everyone who loved Kabosu. The Japanese dog was over 18 years old when she took her last breath.
Expressing appreciation, the official Dogecoin handle posted,
“Today, Kabosu, our community's shared friend and inspiration, peacefully passed, in the arms of her person. The impact this one dog has made across the world is immeasurable. She was a being who knew only happiness and limitless love. Please keep her spirit and her family in your heart, and most importantly carry her with you as your story continues - we are all fortunate for hers to have touched and shaped ours.”
The crypto community started showering condolences on the heels of the announcement. A particular user - ‘MaddSprings’ - remembered Kabosu as “the face of the first crypto I ever bought,” and the “goodest doge to ever exist.”
Kabosu had fallen ill with leukemia and a liver disease in 2022, around Christmas. At that time she had stopped eating and drinking voluntarily. Despite being in a critical condition, Kabosu bounced back swiftly.
Sato adopted Kabosu in 2008. Two years down the line, she posted a fun picture of the dog on her blog, leading to the creation of several viral memes. The memes, retrospectively, inspired Dogecoin. The image featured the dog pulling a weird face. Sako once revealed that she was initially going to trash the picture, but now likes it.
In April, the Own the Doge DAO purchased the rights to the picture associated to Dogecoin from the dog’s owner. The organization spent around three years finalizing the deal. Paying tribute to Kabosu and her legacy, the DAO posted,
“Your internet family will miss you.”
