American actress Sydney Sweeney’s account was hacked a few hours back to promote a crypto token.
The now-deleted posts sent out via her account allegedly read,
“going live on spaces soon, stay tuned to see what $sweeney can do… well i think it’s time… $sweeney is now live 100mc incoming.”
The link to a particular Telegram channel was also shared on her account. The administrator allusively admitted to hacking her X account.
The admin/the team involved also alleged that they were the ones involved in the X account hacks of rapper 50 Cent and wrestler Hulk Hogan. At that time, they promoted similar fake tokens.
Without revealing the name or other details, they bluntly cautioned members of the channel that they were looking to target a celebrity who was even more “popular” than the American model next.
From a high of $0.00388, sweeney’s price was down to $0.0006143 at press time. In retrospect, its market cap shrunk from $3.85 million to $592k.
A bunch of other tokens with the same sweeney ticker were also launched around the same time.
Here, it is worth recalling that Sweeney’s account was also targeted by hackers earlier this year to promote Solana-based token MILK.
Stalwarts from the space have not been happy with celebrity coin launches. For instance, Ethereum’s co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently called out the ongoing celebrity coin experimentation. Via a post on X, he asserted that he was “feeling quite unhappy” about how things have been panning out this cycle.
According to him, a project is worthy of respect only if its “end is worthy,” i.e. if it contributes to something meaningful. However, he disregarded the notion of financialization “as the final product."
Iggy Azalea’s MOTHER token - that is touted to be the flag-bearer of celebrity coins - did have its own fair share of ups, but over the past few days, it has only been trending downwards. With a market cap of $49.7 million, the aforementioned crypto was priced at $0.05029, down 11.5% on the daily timeframe.
