Microsoft and Crowdstrike Outage Causes Global Tech Disruptions, Crypto Remains Unshaken

July 19, 2024

In a global technological mishap, a faulty update from cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike has triggered widespread disruptions across numerous global businesses, impacting various sectors from transportation to healthcare.

However, there was a catch: the crypto industry remained unaffected.

The tech issue originated from an update to Crowdstrike’s Falcon Sensor security product, which led to countless Windows-based systems facing the notorious "Blue Screen of Death" (BSOD), rendering them unable to reboot.

The disruption has caused operational paralysis in some of the world's busiest airports, with digital display boards frozen and numerous flights grounded.

Social media platforms such as Elon Musk’s X have been flooded with images and reports from users around the world detailing the extent of the impact.

Reportedly, the update has affected systems across continents, with initial reports emerging from Australia and New Zealand, before spreading to Asia and Europe.

Interestingly, despite the chaos across the traditional tech space, the crypto industry has shown resilience. Crypto businesses, including major players like Polygon, reported no disruptions.

Polygon's Chief Information Security Officer, Mudit Gupta, highlighted that “Polygon Labs also uses Crowdstrike” but their systems remained unaffected thanks to the fact they don’t “roll out non-critical updates to staff before testing them.”

Notably, the crypto industry's resilience amid this chaos does not mean the global crypto market itself was entirely unshaken—a modest dip did occur, with Bitcoin retracting by 1.2% and the overall market slipping by 1%.

However, these declines pale in comparison to the tumult observed in traditional sectors.

Crowdstrike’s stock felt the brunt of investor unease, plummeting nearly 15%, and Microsoft also saw a decline of nearly 2%, reflecting the widespread anxiety over the outage's ripple effects.

According to the report, Crowdstrike has been actively working to mitigate the fallout, issuing a fix for the defective update and providing continuous support to affected customers.

Microsoft's involvement in this tech mishap is primarily related to its Windows operating system, on which the faulty Crowdstrike software was operating.

The tech giant has historically collaborated with cybersecurity firms like Crowdstrike to boost the security of its products, making this incident a significant concern for both entities involved.
