Celebrity Crypto Scam: Hackers Hijack Doja Cat’s X Account to Pump DOJA Token

July 9, 2024

Earlier today, Amala Zandile Dlamini, an American Rapper and Singer popularly known as Doja Cat, became a victim of a cybersecurity breach.

Her X platform account, formerly known as Twitter, was hacked, leading to unauthorized promotions of a cryptocurrency token called ‘DOJA’.

The compromised account, followed by 5.6 million users, particularly began promoting the DOJA token through a series of posts, seemingly pointing to a security breach.

One post urged followers to "Keep buying DOJA," while another post declared, "The real queen of Solana DOJA," referencing a post made by Iggy Azalea, another celebrity who now owns the now-popular MOTHER memecoin token.

The onslaught of the Doja Cat’s unauthorized posts began at 7:15 pm ET on Monday, turning the account into a tool for cryptocurrency promotion.

Following this. Doja Cat, who boasts a substantial following across social platforms, was quick to address the issue. She alerted her 24 million Instagram followers, clarifying that the promotional posts made on X were not authored by her.

This swift response was crucial in managing the misinformation spread by the hackers. The breach not only involved unauthorized posts but also the deletion of the singer’s profile picture and bio, further indicating the depth of the intrusion.

The Impact of the Hack on the Solana-Based Token

The hack which centered around a series of posts promoting the DOJA token on the Solana blockchain wasn’t quite effective.

Despite the hackers' efforts to drum up excitement and investment in the token through high-profile exposure, the response from the market was lukewarm.

Onchain data from Dexscreener revealed that the token saw less than 16,000 transactions, generating a mere $2.2 million in trading volume — a figure quite less compared to other similar incidents.

The situation took a downturn as the value of the DOJA token plummeted dramatically. From a peak of $0.001644, the token's price crashed to a low of $0.00001558, with its market cap following suit, collapsing from $1.61 million to just $15,000.

Notably, this breach is part of a larger trend of targeted hacks involving celebrities’ social media accounts to promote cryptocurrency projects. Just recently, American actress Sydney Sweeney’s X account was also hacked to promote a crypto token named ‘sweeney.’
